Kathleen Sheridan
Born in Oakland, California in 1952, Kathleen Sheridan spent the first part of her life moving from place to place. Her earliest art influences were two prints framed by her mother: Pinkie by Thomas Lawrence and Blue Boy by Thomas Gainsborough. At the age of 10 she had the stunning experience of seeing the paintings in person at the Huntington Library and suddenly art became tangible and personal. She began painting in earnest at the age of 19 and between work and babies she taught herself to paint. Early financial constraints required that she limit her palette to 9 colors, a practice that remains with her to this day. Along the way, she studied with Wayne Thiebaud and Hardy Hanson, earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1988 from the University of California at Santa Cruz.
In 1987, she became the Executive Director of the San Benito County Arts Commission for 7 years. During that time, she worked with the California Arts Council and was Chair of the California Assembly of Arts Agencies for the Central Coast region. She joined the board of the Hollister Downtown Association in 1989 and became its ED in 1994. Currently, she is working as an oil painter, in a hyper-realist style which focuses on rural life in San Benito County. She also works as a non-profit consultant and a yoga teacher. She and her husband Kent Child have art studios at their Sally Street home and spend a good portion of their time with their family that includes 12 grandchildren.
