Madera Theatre Project 2025

Production Manager – Madera Theatre Project

Are you a well-organized person who can flourish within the exciting, complicated and sometimes hectic world and neck-breaking speed of producing live theatre?   Madera Theatre Project may have the job for you.

Background:
Now going into our fourth season, Madera Theatre Project (MTP) is a funded program through Madera Unified School District (MUSD) and administered by Madera County Arts Council (MCAC). The purpose of Madera Theatre Project is to provide access for MUSD students to stay involved in live theatre during the summer and winter breaks.

MTP produces a total of four (4) shows.  This season, we are producing ‘James and the Giant Peach, Jr.’ which opens in January 2025 at Madera South High School.  Then, this summer, starting in June 2025, we will be producing three more live shows, which will be produced at Matilda Torres High School, Madera South High School and Madera High School.

For more information about MTP, please check out this webpage information below.

The job:
We are currently seeking a Production Manager.  What does a production manager do?  Well, a lot actually. A theatre production manager is responsible for the technical aspects of a live theatre production, including ensuring that it is completed on time, on budget and in a highly safe manner.

Reporting to the Artistic Director Ginger Latimer and Managing Producers of Madera Theatre Project Brandon Gilles and Jim Kocher, the production manager at Madera Theatre Project will work in partnership with the directors, stage managers, production designers and technical crews to achieve the goal of producing live theatre productions and getting them successfully to the stage.

What will you do as Production Manager?

You will be the liaison between directors, designers, and technical staff for each show to ensure smooth communication.

Creating and tracking contracts for each member of all four productions, including directors, stage managers, designers, and crew.

Oversee all aspects of production planning and execution of Madera Theatre Project shows, including schedules and venues for rehearsals, performances, and technical runs.

During the lead up to each show opening, the production manager will oversee production notes from each show.  Please note: We will be producing three shows in Summer 2025.  Shows will have overlapping schedules; for example: rehearsals for one show will begin while a current show is running.

When shows open, you will oversee the house management manager and staff at each high school.

Work with Madera County Arts Council to assist in management and allocation of budgets and ensure financial resources are allocated effectively.

In addition, the production manager will:

Supervise the technical crew during rehearsals and performances.

Ensure compliance with safety regulations and industry standards.

Troubleshoot any issues that arise during productions.

Organize and lead production meetings to discuss progress and challenges.

Maintain inventory of equipment and supplies needed for all productions.

Foster a collaborative environment among all production team members.

Requirements

This is a job for someone who has some experience in the world of theatre.  This job is for you if you are someone who loves to juggle multiple tasks and can keep all those balls in the air effectively.

The candidate should have keen organizational skills and will be able to oversee all aspects of multiple live theatrical productions for Madera Theatre Project.  Typically, this means a group of about 25-30 people from directors, stage managers, costume and light designers, construction crews, teachers and school staff members.  This may also include interaction with parents of students, and patrons attending the shows.

In addition to having mad organizational skills, and an ability to have multiple projects going on at the same time, the candidate will also need a heavy dose of customer service and people skills as they navigate from school to school and person to person. You will be representing Madera County Arts Council and Madera Unified School District, so excellent interactions with a variety of folks is also part of the job.

Please note: You will be required to follow the rules and regulations of Madera County Arts Council and Madera Unified School District.  You will be asked to submit to a background check including fingerprinting and a TB test.

Also note: This is not an hourly position.  A stipend will be paid to the Production Manager for their hard work, organization and tenacity.

Do you like what you’re reading above?  Are you officially geeking out on being a part of a fast-paced and exciting season of live theatre?

If so, please forward your resume – including a short cover letter as to why you want to be considered for this job and email to: Jim Kocher – Executive Director Madera County Arts Council and Managing Project Producer of Madera Theatre Project – jkocher@maderaarts.org

Thank you.

What’s the story of
Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach?

When James is sent by his conniving aunts to chop down their old fruit tree, he discovers a magic potion that grows a tremendous peach, rolls into the ocean and launches a journey of enormous proportions. James befriends a collection of singing insects that ride the giant piece of fruit across the ocean, facing hunger, sharks and plenty of disagreements along the way.  The show is a musical and super fun!

Meet the characters of the show
James and the Giant Peach, Jr.

James
James is the hero of our story, on an epic quest to find a family of his own and gain confidence.

Spiker and Sponge
Spiker and Sponge are James’ aunts James and make him their own personal servant. Spiker is the brains and Sponge is more concerned with finding something to eat.

Ladahlord
Ladahlord is a mysterious character who seems to have a hand in the magical things that are happening. He’s a bit off, and carefully watches over James, helping him move toward a better life.

Matron Nurse
The Matron Nurse runs the Painswick Orphanage, and you definitely get a sense she hasn’t had a vacation in years.

Centipede
Centipede may be a bit of grouch, but he is loyal, and gains James’ trust.

Grasshopper
Grasshopper, the leader of the Insects, is an optimist and assumes a paternal role in James life.

Spider
Spider is a clever creature who becomes a fun-loving older sister to James.

Ladybug
Ladybug immediately takes on a doting, maternal role in James life.

Earthworm
Earthworm is a gentle spirit, although he can be a bit of a coward. Luckily, he gains enough courage to save the day by baiting some gullible seagulls.

Billy and Bobby Bobby-Cop
Billy and Bobby Bobby-Cop are a perfectly unified pair of cops working for Scotland Yard. This is fun cameo role for two performers who work well together.

And a variety of other characters including Vagrants, Sharks And Seagulls, Reporters, New Yorkers, Angry Crowd, Zoo Crowd, Hollywood Agents, Cruise Ensemble and Garden Chorus
