Mural Ribbon Cutting and Dedication!

Madera County Arts Council & Madera International Women’s Day Committee presents

Women of the World Mural Ribbon Cutting & Dedication

Friday, March 8th, 2019 at 2 p.m.

Where: Madera County Art Council’s Circle Gallery

424 N. Gateway Drive, Madera, CA 93637

On Friday, March 8th, 2019 at 2 p.m. there will be a Ribbon Cutting & Dedication of the Women of the World Mural at Madera County Art Council’s Circle Gallery, located at 424 N. Gateway Drive, Madera, CA 93637. This 40-foot mural was painted in 1998 by the inmates of Valley State Prison for Women in Chowchilla. When the prison changed to a men’s prison in 2012, the mural was taken down and put into storage. In 2016, it was given to Madera County Arts Council for restoration and display. This event is being organized in conjunction with International Women’s Day with the help of the Madera International Women’s Day Committee. Attendees will be treated to a performance by Ballet Folklorico de Madera.

When looking for a new location, Madera County Arts Council specifically looked for a place that had room to display the mural. In July of 2018, Madera County Arts Council relocated to 424 N. Gateway Drive where there is a 45 foot wall with 6-foot overhang to protect it from the elements and receives minimal sun exposure. With partial funding from the American Association of University Women, staff and volunteers worked to clean, restore, and add protective coatings to ready it for its new home. Installation was paid for by the owners of the property, Phil & Klina Oberti. Lighting has been donated by BK lighting but Madera County Arts Council is still looking for electricians and landscapers to volunteer their expertise to help with installation.
